Supporting Mental Health and Building Resiliency

February 11, 2021

Dear Students,

I know you hear a lot about protecting yourself from COVID-19, but today I want to talk about an equally important facet of your well-being: mental health.

At University Life’s COVID-19 Forum in January, Dr. Aisha Holder, a Clinical Psychologist at Columbia Health, shared valuable advice about how to build your emotional resiliency – your ability to adapt to stressful situations or crises. In particular, she advises:

  • Maintaining a daily routine
  • Connecting with your community
  • Accepting that change happens
  • Practicing self compassion
  • Practicing gratitude
  • Seeking professional help, even if you are not in crisis

She also shared: “I want to acknowledge that you are not alone if you’re experiencing a range of emotions due to the significant stress associated with COVID-19. There’s fear and isolation and a sense of loss. And while there is light at the end of the tunnel, this virus will continue to affect our lives in profound ways, which makes self-care and wellness and particularly resiliency very essential.”

I highly recommend watching her full talk. I have personally been following some of her advice, including practicing gratitude and reaching out when I need help. You can access these resources whenever you need them: Counseling and Psychological Services (Morningside), Student Health on Haven (CUIMC), Religious Life. You can also explore these coping tools

Just need a break? University Life also offers a variety of virtual events to connect you with the broader community, no matter where you are.

If you need support accessing any of these resources or opportunities, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] any time – we are always happy to support you.

Take care,
