Messages to the Community

On Last Night's Attack at a Hanukkah Gathering in Monsey, NY

December 29, 2019 – We learned late last night about the horrific stabbings at a Hanukkah party in Monsey, New York, and we are keenly aware of the significant increase in hate crimes against Jewish communities in New York more generally. Please know that our thoughts are with the victims of this newest wave of violence targeted at Jewish communities and with those in the Columbia community who may feel especially affected and outraged by this attack in the wake of so many others.

A Message Regarding a Racist Robocall Voicemail

December 26, 2019 - We have become aware that robocall messages from a white supremacist group were received on many faculty and staff landlines at Barnard and may have been received by a small number of Columbia faculty and staff as well.  The contents of this message, related to Tess Majors’ recent death, are abhorrent and viciously racist.

Mourning the Tragic Death of a Barnard Student

December 12, 2019 - We write to share profoundly sad news about the death of a Barnard student, Tessa Majors, who was fatally injured during an armed robbery on Wednesday evening in Morningside Park. It is difficult to capture in words our deep sorrow for Tessa’s family and friends, and for the loss to the broader Barnard and Columbia community of which Tessa was newly a member.

On Yesterday’s Shootings at a Kosher Market in Jersey City, New Jersey

December 11, 2019 - Three people inside a kosher supermarket in Jersey City, New Jersey, were killed yesterday, and multiple reports have indicated that two of them were members of the Jewish community in Jersey City and the third an immigrant from Ecuador. The attackers also killed a longtime Jersey City police detective. Early reports in the ongoing investigation indicate a link between the attacks and antisemitic and anti-police views expressed in writings of one of the assailants.
