Support after bomb threats on the Morningside Campus

November 08, 2021

Dear Students,

As you may know, today at approximately 2:30 PM ET, Columbia University Public Safety issued a campus-wide emergency alert after receiving bomb threats involving several University buildings on the Morningside Campus. These threats were similar to those made at other colleges around the country this weekend. The University proceeded with an immediate evacuation of the buildings identified in the threat. Following an investigation, the New York City Police Department deemed the threats not to be credible, and the campus buildings have been cleared for occupancy. We wish to thank individuals affected for their patience and cooperation.

I write not only to inform you of these events, but to recognize the distress these incidents may cause for many of us. We reject threats of violence in our community—they are antithetical to our values of community citizenship and mutual care and concern for one another.

I also want to remind you that there are always resources available to you. Columbia Health or Student Health on Haven offer opportunities to speak with a counselor individually at Morningside or CUIMC, join a support group, or access other support resources. For spiritual support, you can also connect with a Religious Life advisor

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] with questions, concerns or feedback, and please take good care of yourself and each other.

Sincerely,

Dennis A. Mitchell, DDS, MPH (he/him/his)
