Making the Most of Your Free Time and Entering the Green Zone

March 10, 2022

Dear Students,

As we enter the University’s various Spring break periods, I hope you are able to enjoy your time away.

Making the Most of Your Free Time

For many, Spring Break is a great time to reset and relax; coming on the heels of a busy period, it’s also an opportunity to practice enjoying your free time. In order to relieve some of the pressure that can come with downtime, try some of the following tips to come back from your break feeling refreshed.

  • Balance making plans with taking time for yourself. Try not to fill every moment with activities--leave some true downtime. Give yourself permission to do nothing throughout your break in whatever way is most relaxing for you. Sit outside and listen to music or take that extra nap.
  • Try checking off a few of your easiest tasks throughout the week to declutter your mind. Something as simple as organizing your workspace can free up some mental space.
  • Turn off notifications for as many apps as you can during your break if it will help you ‘unplug’ and stay more present; some people find it helpful to temporarily remove email and social media apps from their phones during vacations.

Updated Masking Policies

With the University moving into the “green zone”, indoor masking will become optional on Monday, March 14th. This change also means that you will no longer need to complete a daily attestation in the ReopenCU app in order to access campus. I ask that you respect the choices of Columbia community members who may continue to wear masks, and not make assumptions about their reasoning.

Using an At-Home COVID Test

With at-home testing becoming the norm, you may want to learn more about how and when to test. The University’s COVID-19 website and the CDC website provide an in-depth look at the best practices for self-testing.
