In Response to a Racist Message Sent to Members of the Lamont-Doherty Community

June 1, 2019 - Yesterday, graduate students on Columbia’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory campus received an email from an individual espousing racist, anti-black views. We write to alert you to this occurrence and to reinforce that Columbia’s diversity, including our racial diversity, is an essential source of our strength as an institution.

May 1, 2019 - We want to remind you that Columbia Public Safety has important information for you about safety and emergency protocols on and off campus, especially in light of yesterday's tragic shooting at University of North Carolina-Charlotte. 


In Response to an Antisemitic Attack in San Diego

April 28, 2019 - Yesterday, the last day of Passover, a Jewish community gathered peacefully in their place of worship in Poway, California. While participating in religious services, they faced a shooting that took the life of at least one member of their community and injured others.



In the Wake of the Terrorist Attacks in Sri Lanka

April 22, 2019 -   It is with great sadness that we write to you about the violence during Easter services and at other sites in Sri Lanka yesterday. We know that many in our community who identify as Christian or who hold close ties to this region of the world may be particularly distressed by these tragic events.
