Online Event

Hear from colorism experts in law and sociology with speakers Dr.Trina Jones of Duke Law School and Dr. Ellis Monk, a sociology professor at Harvard University. This conference will be moderated by TK Saccoh, an anti-colorism advocate and senior at Columbia University. Register here.

Colorism, discrimination against dark-skinned people within the same race, is not considered enough in mainstream conversations about systemic racism. This conference invites the public to engage with compelling research that demonstrates how colorism creates disparities in mass incarceration, policing, and public health.

Inspired by the character Pecola Breedlove in Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, this conference aims to explore how colorism affects beauty, self-esteem, and romantic partnership alongside issues of health, incarceration, and institutionalized violence. It is important that these issues are discussed in tandem since they are very related.

This conference is funded in part by the Racial Justice Mini-Grant Program through University Life and supported by the Institute for Religion, Culture, and Public Life. More information about the conference and Dr. Jones and Dr.Monk's research on colorism here.
