University Life Events & Opportunities

  • Low Lounge: Summer in December. The University Life Events Council invites you to Low Lounge: Summer in December. This annual Columbia tradition takes place in Low Library and provides a space to relax and unwind during finals. Pretend it’s summertime with ice cream, snacks, games, a photo station, and other fun activities. Sunday, December 10 from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Register here.
  • Sing at Lessons & Carols. Calling all singers! Religious Life is looking for choir members to perform at the annual Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols at St. Paul’s Chapel, a service of traditional Christmas music and readings. Learn more and sign up by Thursday, November 30.
  • Yoga Class (In-Person). Take a break and relax with yoga in Earl Hall, hosted by Religious Life. Please bring your own mat and arrive 5-10 minutes early to sign in and set up. Thursday, November 30, 7:00 - 8:00 PM. Learn more.
  • Grad Hangout: Stretch. Breathe. Meditate. (In-Person). Take a moment to breathe, stretch, or meditate. Light refreshments will be available. This event is part of The Graduate Initiative. Tuesday, December 5,  2:30 - 5:15 PM. Register here.
  • Success Workshop: Building your Brand in the Workplace (Virtual). Join Jilliene Rodriguez, Associate Dean for Diversity and Community Engagement at SIPA, for this Graduate Initiative workshop exploring what a “personal brand” is, why it matters, and how you can develop one that showcases your diverse background and experience early on in your career.   • Spiritual Wellness Workshops (In-Person). Religious Life and the Spirituality Mind Body Institute at Teachers College invite you to recharge and care for yourself. These upcoming workshops will explore yoga, mindfulness, connecting with nature, photography, and more. Various times, Now - December 14. Learn more and register here.
  • Study Days (In-Person). During finals season, Religious Life will open the Earl Hall Auditorium and provide tea, snacks, and a study space. December 12 - 21. Times vary. Learn more.

Happening Around Campus

  • Columbia Climate School Signature Speaker Series: Dr. Jane Zelikova (Hybrid). Learn about new developments in soil-based climate solutions at this Climate School event featuring Dr. Jane Zelikova, Director of the Soil Carbon Solutions Center at Colorado State University.   • A Climate of Change: Bridging Climate Tech Across the Atlantic (In-Person). Join Columbia Business School and the Tamer Center for a conversation about the market, regulatory, diplomatic, and other considerations for running climate tech businesses in Europe and the United States.   • Édouard Glissant’s Right to Opacity in Practice (In-Person). In this talk, Benjamin P. Davis will discuss recent prayer camps at Standing Rock and on Anishinaabe treaty land in northern Minnesota and how we understand theories of cultural rights.   • Anti-Racism Speaker Series Featuring Dr. Timiya S. Nolan (Virtual). Dr. Nolan will discuss the complexities of identifying and overcoming biases that can infringe on building and maintaining partnerships between academia, community organizations, government, and industry.   • College Walk Tree Lighting (In-Person). Join the Morningside community outside for a festive winter evening and tree lighting. Acappella performances begin at 6:00 PM in Low Plaza, and the countdown to light the College Walk tree starts at 7:30 PM. Thursday, November 30, 5:00 - 8:00 PM. Learn more.
  • Richard Peña Selects (In-Person). Professor Richard Peña has selected six films of particular importance to him and his career to screen at this three day festival. Join the School of the Arts for a moderated discussion to close the festival. Friday, December 1 to Sunday, December 3. Learn More and register.
  • Situational Awareness Training (Virtual). Public Safety presents a training on Situational Awareness: being aware of where you are and what is happening around you. Learn to be alert to potential threats to your health and safety and be cognizant of emergency exits and other paths to safety. Monday, December 4, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Register here.
  • City of Migrants (In-Person). Join the Institute of Latin American Studies for this panel bringing together undergraduate and graduate students who are taking an active role in addressing the challenges migrant newcomers face.
