University Life Events & Opportunities
- Board Game Social (In-Person). Play board games, meet new people, and enjoy Insomnia Cookies with the University Life Events Council. Kick off the evening with a quick round of board game trivia, then enjoy a casual space to play board games and relax with friends. Thursday, November 16, 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Register here.
- Community Impact(ed): A Panel on Education and Community Engagement (In-Person). Join Community Impact for a conversation with educators about career opportunities. Hear from community leaders affecting policy on the local, state, and federal level and those involved in the school system. Dinner will be provided. Friday, November 17, 6:00 - 7:30 PM. - Call for Low Lounge Performers. The University Life Events Council seeks performers to share their talent at Low Lounge: Summer in December, which will take place on Sunday, December 10 from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM in Low Library. This annual Columbia tradition is open to all students from all schools, and provides a space where students can relax and unwind during finals. Apply here by November 22.
- Cultivating Hope. You can learn to be more hopeful. Cultivating a deep hope that is aware of darkness is a practice. Join Dr. Shirley Matthews of Counseling and Psychological Services and Dr. Karissa Thacker of Union Theological Seminary to explore what the combination of positive psychology and religious traditions have to offer you on the path to a more hopeful life. - Spiritual Wellness Workshops (In-Person). Religious Life and the Spirituality Mind Body Institute at Teachers College invite you to recharge and care for yourself. These upcoming workshops will explore yoga, mindfulness, connecting with nature, photography, and more. Various times, October 24 - December 14. Learn more and register here.
- Yoga Class (In-Person). Take a break and relax at this yoga class hosted by Religious Life. Bring your own mat and arrive 5-10 minutes early to sign in and set up. Thursday, November 16, 7:00 - 8:00 PM. Learn more.
Summer Research Opportunity
- Summer of Translational Aging Research for Undergraduates (STAR U). The Department of Neurology invites undergraduate students from all Columbia schools to apply for this fully-funded summer research training program. STAR U is designed to encourage students from diverse and underrepresented communities to pursue further studies and careers in aging and neuroscience related research through mentorship, education, and community building. - Lights on the Plaza (In-Person). Celebrate with the Manhattanville community at the annual winter tree lighting ceremony. Hosted by The Forum. TONIGHT, November 14, 5:30 - 6:30 PM. Learn More.
- Helping Hands Food Drive (In-Person). The CUIMC Office of Government & Community Affairs welcomes donations of nonperishable food items to support The Fresh Youth Initiatives Helping Hands Food Bank. Now through Tuesday, November 21. Learn more.
- Allyship in The Workplace: A Fireside Chat (In-Person). Join The Center on Global Energy Policy for a fireside chat with Jason Bordoff and Karen Catlin. They will discuss the challenges employees who are members of underrepresented groups face in the workplace and how to take action as an ally. Thursday, November 16, 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Register here.
- The Migrant “Crisis” in NYC: Immigration, The Right to Shelter, and the Right to the City (In-Person). This conference will bring together experts to explore the current experiences of immigrants and asylum seekers in accessing housing and space within New York City. - Why Flying Is Miserable & How To Fix It (In-Person). This book talk will feature Ganesh Sitaraman author of Why Flying Is Miserable, a critique of airline deregulation. Hosted by Columbia Global Reports and Columbia Law School. Friday, November 17, 12:30 - 1:30 PM. Register here.
- Fantastic Mr. Fox & The BFG (In-Person) Check out this Lenfest Kids double feature of Fantastic Mr. Fox and The BFG hosted by the School of the Arts. This event is family-friendly and open to the public. Saturday, November 18, 1:00 - 5:00 PM. Register here.
- Music Monday at The Forum (In-Person). The Morrisania Band Project will perform at The Forum's ground-floor Atrium. Enjoy music with the Manhattanville community. November 20, 6:00 - 7:00 PM. Register here.
