On Yesterday’s Shootings at a Kosher Market in Jersey City, New Jersey

December 11, 2019

Dear Columbia Community,

Three people inside a kosher supermarket in Jersey City, New Jersey, were killed yesterday, and multiple reports have indicated that two of them were members of the Jewish community in Jersey City and the third an immigrant from Ecuador. The attackers also killed a longtime Jersey City police detective.

Early reports in the ongoing investigation indicate a link between the attacks and Anti-Semitic and anti-police views expressed in writings of one of the assailants.

We mourn the lives lost to this hate-based violence wherever it occurs. At Columbia, we will continue to work toward a world free from such violence, one in which our diversity is recognized as humanity’s great strength.

Please know that there are resources available to help you process this and other incidents of hatred and violence that occur far too often in these times. Please don’t hesitate to contact your Dean of Students, consult any of these resources or write to the Office of University Life at [email protected].
