Panel: Dismantling Stereotypes About Muslim Women in India

Belonging to the minority group, the 100 million women in India who identify themselves as Muslim today, represent a diverse and heterogenous group spanning ethnicities, languages, and cultural practices. However, there continue to be negative stereotyped narrative of Muslim women in India including as an educationally backward and oppressed monolith. Effective and authentic storytelling that highlights uplifting narratives based on the lived realities of Muslim women of India are critical to overturn these harmful generalizations. The session features Muslim women achievers from India who have broken stereotypes and overcome barriers and challenges to make their mark in the field as authors, journalists, academicians, others. The panelists will discuss their experiences and ideas to dismantle stereotypes about Muslim women in India. This panel is hosted by Ms. Sabah Usmani, PhD student at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, New York.
