Explore a corner of Brooklyn with University Life through an independent bookstore crawl! Bookstores are vital community-centered spaces within New York City’s cultural landscape – take a walk with us and immerse yourself in the stacks.
As part of the Legacy of New York series, our Brooklyn Book Crawl will feature visits to:
- The Ripped Bodice: Situated in Park Slope, this brick-and-mortar shop was founded by two sisters and is entirely devoted to the celebration of romance novels.
- Community Bookstore: Operating since 1971, this Park Slope favorite hosts an array of literary fiction, history, current affairs, poetry, and New York-themed reads. And, so much more!
- Unnameable Books: Located in Prospect Heights, this bookstore sells used and new titles, and is a New Yorker writers' and editors' favorite.
New York City is internationally known for being a literary metropolis. As you explore new and past beloved reads, celebrate the power of storytelling and dialogue, experiencing how community-rooted bookstores preserve culture, amplify diverse voices, and add to the city’s vibrant literary fabric.
The Legacy of New York series invites students to explore the social movements, histories, and communities that have shaped New York City. Through museum visits, walking tours, and site-based learning experiences, this series seeks to highlight and celebrate the diversity of communities, cultures, and events.
