Join us for a captivating movie screening of the documentary that unveils the extraordinary story of Freedom House Ambulance: The First Responders.
About the Film:
Pittsburgh's inner city bore witness to the birth of America’s first EMT service in 1967. Comprised solely of Black men and women from the Hill District neighborhood, the paramedics of Freedom House Ambulance became trailblazers in pre-hospital and CPR care. Conceived to address the needs of Pittsburgh’s African American community, their groundbreaking work laid the foundation for paramedic training nationwide. Despite its success, racism and power dynamics in Pittsburgh led to the closure of Freedom House in 1975, nearly erasing its legacy from history.
