On Sunday, some Columbia affiliates, as well as others from beyond our community, received an email bearing the subject line “Pre-Qualification Request.” The message contained virulent anti-black language.
We write to alert you to this email and to make clear our disgust with its abhorrent content. This is particularly malicious amidst growing calls nationally and in our own community to address and end systemic racism and anti-black violence.
Our Public Safety department has reported the matter to relevant government authorities, and Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT)’s filters have blocked further delivery of this message to Columbia email addresses. As with other racist messages that have been sent to Columbia community members in the past, we take this attack on our values extremely seriously.
In community,
Suzanne B. Goldberg
Executive Vice President for University Life
Herbert and Doris Wechsler Clinical Professor of Law
