Regarding the Shooting in Jacksonville, Florida

Dear Students,

By now, many of you have heard about the fatal shooting at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, which was a targeted attack on the Black community. 

One of Columbia’s greatest assets is our diverse community. The University denounces all forms of racism and bias and will continue working to fulfill its commitment to anti-racism.

Violent acts like this can cause distress, even if you are not directly impacted. I encourage you to lean into your community for support at this time, if this is true for you, and to remember that University resources are also available to you.

• Support from your school: Contact the Dean of Students office for your school. Many of the University’s counseling and wellness resources are available to you as well. 
• Other University supports: 
  • Morningside and Manhattanville students: Counseling and Psychological Services offers individual counseling as well as support groups.
  • CUIMC students: Student Health on Haven offers support sessions, individual counseling, and support groups.
  • For spiritual support, you can connect with an advisor in the Office of Religious Life.
