Bayeté Ross Smith, who was selected this past fall as Columbia Law School’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence for 2021-2022, has overseen the installation of several mixed- and multi-media works in Jerome Greene Hall.

To mark the installation of this exhibition, the community is invited to join a virtual event, entitled “Visualizing Violence: Art Looks at the Law and History of Implicit Bias,” which will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at 6 p.m.

The discussion will examine our society’s relationship with violence, both historically and in contemporary life, through the lenses of identity, history, and visual memory. It will feature an interdisciplinary conversation including Mr. Ross Smith, Professor Jamal Joseph (Columbia School of the Arts), and others. Kendall Thomas, Nash Professor of Law and Director of the Studio for Law and Culture, will serve as moderator.

About the Exhibition

This exhibition, Mr. Ross Smith’s first while in residence at the Law School, features imagery from two series—Red Summers (2021-present) and Taking Aim (2008-present). Red Summers is an immersive film series that uses archival images and contemporary video to explore the history and legacy of domestic terrorist attacks on Black communities in the U.S. during the early 20th Century. Taking Aim employs photography, graphic design, and gun target imagery to explore who in our communities is seen as a victim, who is seen as a threat, and how those perceptions shape the visual politics of gun violence and the way we imagine solutions to it. These works are currently located on the 3rd, 5th, and 6th floors of JGH and will remain on display through the end of the semester.
