Legacy of New York – Grad Hangout: Studio Museum

March 11, 2026

Kent Hall, 1140 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027 201

Explore the Studio Museum in Harlem with The Graduate Initiative, as part of the Legacy of New York series.

Beginning in 1968, Studio Museum opened a space for artists of African descent-locally, nationally, and internationally to showcase work inspired and influenced by Black culture. At the leadership of Charles E. Innis, a native New Yorker and a member of the famed Harlem Hellfighters, the museum selected Tom Lloyd, sculptor, activist, and community organizer as the museum’s inaugural artist.

During this visit, we’ll study an exhibition of Tom Lloyd’s work – the first of its kind to showcase more than two decades of his creations – and hear from the curator about how his enduring legacy continues to influence and challenge the New York art world.

The Legacy of New York series invites students to explore the social movements, histories, and communities that have shaped New York City. Through museum visits, walking tours, and site-based learning experiences, this series seeks to highlight and celebrate the diversity of communities, cultures, and events.

The Graduate Initiative for Inclusion and Engagement supports graduate and professional students through programs designed to reflect a wide range of lived experiences and perspectives. Designed with the needs of students who may have overcome barriers to higher education in mind, the initiative creates spaces for connection, learning, and growth. All students are welcome.

*Students should plan to meet staff at Kent Hall on the Morningside Campus. We will travel downtown together via the MTA subway. Please note we are unable to cover transportation fares.

Registration needed, CUID required.
