Legacy of New York – American Folk Art Museum: Alexandria Eregbu

February 21, 2026
3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
America/New_York
The Sundial, 535 W. 116 St., New York, NY 10027

Since 1961, the American Folk Art Museum has showcased the exceptional talents and creativity of artists who have refined their art through personal experience and innovative vision. As part of the Legacy of New York series, you’re invited to join an excursion with University Life to the museum at Lincoln Square to witness Alexandria Eregbu’s exhibition Blue Magic.

As a sonic and textile experience exploring the deep histories of the color blue, Eregbu’s exhibition draws from American quilting practices, oral storytelling, sound, and her own family history as a Nigerian-American. Her work serves to honor and reimagine Black contributions to textile history, specifically West Africa’s ties to practices like tie-dying, sewing, embroidery, and quilting.

We’ll hear from the artist herself, and Dr. Chelsea Frazier, a scholar specializing in the intersection of Black feminist literature and theory, in a special Artist Talk about how Eregbu's textile and sound installation engages Black history, heritage, and diasporic memory.

Don’t miss this chance to explore Blue Magic and the enduring histories that bring this art to life.

The Legacy of New York series invites students to explore the social movements, histories, and communities that have shaped New York City. Through museum visits, walking tours, and site-based learning experiences, this series seeks to highlight and celebrate the most diverse communities, cultures, and events in the nation.
