Through interactive discussion and reflection, this workshop explores the roots and contemporary realities of Jewish identity and antisemitism. We will examine the diversity of Jewish experiences, including religious and secular, Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi, and other traditions, and consider how that diversity complicates simple narratives about the Jewish community today.
The session will explore questions such as: What is antisemitism? How does it differ from criticism of Israel? How do freedom of expression, academic freedom, and inclusion intersect on a university campus? Grounded in a commitment to pluralism, respectful dialogue, and the inclusion of all members of the Columbia community, the workshop encourages thoughtful engagement across differing perspectives. Students will leave with a deeper understanding of Jewish identity, practical tools for recognizing and responding to antisemitism, and resources for continued learning. All students are welcome.
This session is a part of the Community Citizenship Initiative (CCI) and is designed for first semester students who want to develop leadership skills grounded in self-awareness and inclusivity. Students attending this workshop will receive credit for CCI and will have their requirement considered complete.
Registration is required, but walk-ins will be admitted as space allows. CUID holders only.
