Grad Hangout: MoMA – Ideas of Africa

April 30, 2026
2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
America/New_York
Kent Hall, 1140 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027 201

Explore The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) with University Life’s Graduate Initiative and Legacy of New York series!

Together, we’ll discover Ideas of Africa: Portraiture and Political Imagination, a new exhibit considering how photographic portraiture in Central and West Africa shaped political imagination and Pan-African solidarity during the mid-20th century. Offering a spotlight on the transformations that took place during the era of decolonization, this exhibit reviews artistic expression from across the African continent and displays the extraordinary power of photography.

Become acquainted with celebrated artists including Jean Depara, Kwame Brathwaite, and Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and see how their work continues to impact global imagination and culture today.

The Legacy of New York series invites students to explore the social movements, histories, and communities that have shaped New York City. Through museum visits, walking tours, and site-based learning experiences, this series seeks to highlight and celebrate the diversity of communities, cultures, and events.

*Students should plan to meet staff at Kent Hall on the Morningside Campus. We will travel downtown together via the MTA subway. Please note we are unable to cover transportation fares.

Registration is required, CUID holders only.
