University Life Events Council Structure

The University Life Events Council is a group of students from across Columbia’s 17 schools who plan activities that connect students to each other and foster a sense of community and belonging across Columbia. This page summarizes how each person involved with the Events Council contributes to this goal and ways you can get involved with the Council.

Events Council Structure

The Chairs' of Production responsibilities include creating and sharing post-event surveys, tracking event participants, collecting event photos, leading bi-weekly meetings, collaborating with events committees and creating staffing plans, determining volunteer needs for events, creating and sending out debrief documents to Events Council committees, and creating and implementing 1 to 2 passive tabling events throughout the semester.

Will take on a larger role in the planning and implementation of events and programs for their respective committees. Committees include: the Welcome Home Columbia (WHC) Committee and the End-of-Term Committee. Event Committee Leads are charged with making sure inclusion & belonging and other University Life core values inform Events Council program planning. Committee Leads meet bi-weekly with an advisor to share updates and determine next steps. Committee Leads for WHC will plan for events held during the first weeks of classes and will begin planning in the Summer. 

Students from Columbia's 17 schools can join the University Life Events Council as a committee member. Committee members participate in the event planning, volunteer at events and attend meetings to share ideas. Committees include: the Welcome Home Columbia (WHC) Committee, End-of-Term Committee, and the Support Committee.

Welcome Home Columbia Committee

This committee plans Welcome Home Columbia, which takes place during the first and second week of classes in the Fall and Spring semesters. We plan for Welcome Home throughout the Summer and Fall semesters. Here’s some of the Welcome Home Columbia events we've hosted.

This committee is responsible for planning and implementing Columbia's traditional semester-end University Life Events Council study break events. Events include Low Lounge and Night @ Butler.

Support Committee

This committee plays a pivotal role in staffing events, engaging with event participants, and the outreach efforts of the Events Council. While this committee does not plan events, they can staff all events put forth by the events council throughout the academic year.

Events Council Responsibilities and Expectations

Every role on the Events Council has unique responsibilities. Expectations for each position are laid out below:

  • Meet for check-in meetings with advisor (as needed)
  • Attend a one-day leadership meeting at the start of each semester to discuss goals, communication, and organizational plans for the semester
  • Assist with recruiting committee members throughout the the fall and spring semesters as needed
  • Support event marketing and outreach
  • Meet for check-in meetings with advisor (bi-weekly)
  • Facilitate meeting weekly with their respective committees to plan upcoming events
  • Attend a one-day leadership meeting at the start of each semester to discuss goals, communication and organizational plans for the semester
  • Assist with recruiting committee members throughout the the fall and spring semesters as needed
  • Support event marketing and outreach

Advisors

University Life Student Life staff advises the University Life Events Council and approves all proposed events. University Life will provide event committees with a budget for each program, assist with logistics of events, and offer feedback on proposed event marketing tactics.

How Are Events Council Student Leaders Selected?

Recruitment for the University Life Events Council Leadership Team happens through an open application process. From this pool, the Events Council advisor conducts interviews to choose members with the skills, commitment, and passion for each position. Events Council members are selected with the goal of having as many schools represented as possible, to ensure that a diverse set of voices are heard in the creation of programming.
