Welcome Back and a Safety Update

January 21, 2020

Dear Columbia Community:

As we begin the new semester, we write to welcome you back and share updates on the University’s ongoing work to support the safety of our campuses and our community.  We have been working to review and enhance campus resources, protocols and safety communications, and are grateful for the many ideas and suggestions we have received from faculty, students and staff.

In December, you received a message from Public Safety outlining expanded shuttle hours and extended staffing of Public Safety Guard Posts on Morningside Drive, all of which are continuing. Public Safety will also be offering situational awareness training seminars. We encourage students, faculty and staff to take advantage of this opportunity. Please visit Public Safety’s website for more information. University Life’s app, easy to download, includes emergency contacts and other important information.

Columbia continues to be in conversation with the New York City Parks Department, the Friends of Morningside Park — a community-based organization that supports the park, the New York City Police Department and neighborhood elected officials. These conversations focus not only on safety enhancements, but also on new programming to increase activity and vitality within the park and the surrounding communities.

You will receive updates about additional safety enhancements as the semester progresses. In the meantime, we continue to welcome your questions and suggestions.

With best wishes for an enriching semester,
