Fall 2018 Welcome Back (Faculty and Staff)

September 04, 2018

Welcome to Columbia’s 265th Academic Year & New University Life Resources and Programs for Faculty and Staff

Dear Colleagues,

I write with a welcome back and to share several new University Life programs and resources of interest to faculty, staff and researchers.

Your resource card:  This card highlights where to go and what to know about many important University resources and policies, including academic integrity, disability accommodations for students, gender-based misconduct, discrimination, student mental health and more. You can always find the card, resource links and a place to report concerns on the University Life website.

University-wide conversations:  Throughout the year, we bring together faculty experts, students and staff to discuss pressing issues with each other and engaging guests. Join us for the first of these on September 25 at noon with AWAKENING OUR DEMOCRACY: Borders, Bans and Belonging – featuring Mae Ngai, Lung Family Professor of Asian American Studies and Professor of History, Sarah Stillman of Columbia Journalism School’s Global Migration Project, Commissioner Bitta Mostofi of Mayor de Blasio’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and Paul Rosenzweig, former Assistant Secretary for Policy with the Department of Homeland Security in the Bush administration.

For regular updates from University Life on pressing issues and events year-round, reply to this email and we’ll add you to our mailing list.

Task Force on Inclusion and Belonging @ Columbia:  I invite you to join this Task Force, which includes colleagues and students from all Columbia schools and works on issues and responsive strategies that address students’ experiences both in and outside of the classroom related to diversity, inclusion and a sense of belonging on campus. Please write to me directly, or learn more here.

As always, I welcome your ideas and suggestions for University Life’s work in our community.

With best wishes for the new academic year,

Suzanne B. Goldberg

Executive Vice President for University Life
