Awakening Our Democracy 3/18 - Racial Justice Outlook: Possibilities of Progress in 2021 and Beyond

March 11, 2021

Dear Columbia community,

We write to invite you to join a special upcoming University Life event: our next Awakening Our Democracy panel, Racial Justice Outlook: Possibilities of Progress in 2021 and Beyond on Thursday 3/18 at 4:00 PM ET.

In 2020 we witnessed an unprecedented outcry to dismantle anti-Black racism and change the structures that support it. How will this movement impact the ability to move from conversation to action at all levels of society? What will it look like for community organizers and voters to hold systems of power accountable for racial and economic justice, and how can leadership at the federal, state, and local levels advance progress? And what more can we do at Columbia to further these goals?

 Panelists will include:

  • Nina Alvarez, CBS Assistant Professor of International Journalism, Columbia University
  • Midwin Charles, Founder, Midwin Charles & Associates LLC and political, legal and culture commentator
  • Lurie Daniel Favors, Esq., Interim Executive Director, Center for Law and Social Justice, Medgar Evers College, CUNY
  • Dennis A. Mitchell, DDS, MPH, Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement, Professor of Dental Medicine at CUMC
  • Eric Tang, Director, Center for Asian American Studies and Associate Professor, Black Studies at The University of Texas at Austin

Please submit your questions with your event registration.

We look forward to seeing you!

Take care,
