The Greek Transformation: Overcoming a Financial Crisis, Populism and COVID

A discussion between

Kyriakos Mitsotakis
Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic

and

Lee C. Bollinger
President of Columbia University in the City of New York.

Over the past decade, Greece was faced with an unprecedented economic crisis. Populism from the left and extreme right brought further turmoil to society. Yet in July 2019, the New Democracy Party led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis claimed a decisive electoral victory based on sound policies that appealed to moderate and centrist voters. This is how Greece defeated populism, dealt a decisive blow to a neo-Nazi group that had managed to enter Parliament in 2015 and now finds its leaders in jail, and, of course, is weathering the first wave of the pandemic successfully.

This discussion will explore the political and leadership qualities that are needed to address major societal and economic challenges.

Columbia University students are invited to participate in a moderated question and answer session following the discussion.

Cosponsored by the Center on Global Economic Governance and Columbia Global Centers
