In recognition of Women’s History Month, University Life invites you to join us for an excursion to the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side, honoring the women who labored tirelessly to build better lives for themselves and their communities in early 20th-century New York City.

As part of the Legacy of New York series, this guided tour brings to life the experiences of women who navigated strict gender roles and economic hardship. We’ll visit the Levine Family’s 325-square-foot apartment, where Polish-Jewish immigrants Jennie Levine and her family built a new life full of dreams for a brighter future.

Through this experience, we’ll discover how women collectively advocated for their families and communities at a time where they faced consistent exclusion. From the Kosher Meat Boycott of 1902 to the Uprising of the 20,000 in 1909, we’ll gain a deeper understanding of how these women shaped and inspired generational change.

The Legacy of New York series invites students to explore the social movements, histories, and communities that have shaped New York City. Through museum visits, walking tours, and site-based learning experiences, this series seeks to highlight and celebrate the diversity of communities, cultures, and events.

*Students should plan to meet staff at Kent Hall on the Morningside Campus. We will travel downtown together via the MTA subway. Please note we are unable to cover transportation fares.
