In collaboration with the Central Park Conservancy, join University Life to learn about the history of Seneca Village!
Before Central Park was created, the landscape along what is now the Park’s perimeter from West 82nd to West 89th Street was the site of Seneca Village, a thriving, predominantly Black community where many residents built businesses and owned property. The community was displaced through NYC legislative action in the 1860s to make way for Central Park.
The tour will consist of a guided walk to notable community locations, a timeline of the village, and visits to plaques and land markers that still exist today. Before the tour, you’ll receive a small notebook to write down facts, thoughts, and questions. At the end of the program, you’ll gather with fellow participants to share your reflections.
This event is part of the Community Citizenship Initiative (CCI) and is designed for first semester students who want to develop skills grounded in self-awareness and inclusivity. Students attending will receive credit for CCI and will have their requirement considered complete.
*Students should plan to meet staff at Kent Hall (Room 201) on the Morningside Campus. We will travel downtown together via the MTA subway. Please note we are unable to cover transportation fares.
Registration is required; CUID holders only. If you are added to the waitlist, University Life will email you if a spot becomes available.
