Legacy of New York: Día de los Muertos in NYC

November 1, 2026
12:00 PM - 3:00 PM
America/New_York
Kent Hall, 1140 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027 201

Meet at the Morningside campus to learn and/or share about Día de los Muertos and different cultural practices surrounding death and the afterlife. We will travel together as a group to an annual Día de los Muertos community celebration in the East Village, hosted by MexCulture. We'll work on traditional Mexican crafts, honor our departed loved ones by adding their photo to the community altar, and enjoy regional Mexican folk music, such as Son Jarocho and Mariachi.

The Legacy of New York series invites students to explore the social movements, histories, and communities that have shaped New York City. Through museum visits, walking tours, and site-based learning experiences, this series seeks to highlight and celebrate the diversity of communities, cultures, and events.

This event is part of the Community Citizenship Initiative (CCI) and is designed for first semester students who want to develop skills grounded in self-awareness and inclusivity. Students attending will receive credit for CCI and will have their requirement considered complete.

*Students should plan to meet staff at Kent Hall (Room 201) on the Morningside Campus. We will travel downtown together via the MTA subway. Please note we are unable to cover transportation fares.

Registration is required; CUID holders only. If you are added to the waitlist, University Life will email you if a spot becomes available.
