A Jury of Our Peers: From the Ballot Box to the Jury Box

October 26, 2023
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
America/New_York
International Affairs Building, 420 W. 118 St., New York, NY 10027 Lehman Suite, IAB Room 406

The Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative for Civil and Political Rights is pleased to invite you to a conversation about the restoration of voting rights and jury service for individuals who have been convicted of felonies. We will be joined by colleagues from local nonprofits who currently have a case challenging this New York State law -- as applied in Manhattan, where a long history of racialized policing and prosecution have left Black people (and Black men in particular) substantially overrepresented among the population with conviction histories and underrepresented in the jury pool. Through this discussion panel, we hope to emphasize jury services as a critical form of political participation akin to voting.

This event is co-sponsored by the Lehman Center for American History.

Speakers:

  • Daudi Justin GS'18, Staff Attorney, Neighborhood Defender Service
  • Perry Grossman, Director of the Voting Rights Project, New York Civil Liberties Union
  • Paul Keefe, VP of Legal Services, Community Service Society
  • Daniel Lambright, Senior Staff Attorney, New York Civil Liberties Union

Refreshments will be served.

Registration for this event is required.
