Identity Politics in the Digital Age

April 10, 2026
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
America/New_York
Kent Hall, 1140 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027 201

Academic institutions are often among the first places where people encounter real diversity. Because of this, the way colleges and universities approach identity and culture plays a major role in shaping how students understand themselves, relate to others, and engage with the world.

This facilitated dialogue invites participants to explore some of the internet’s most viral and revealing trends. What do our reactions to popular memes say about the values we absorb, express, or question online? How do factors like Western educational norms, digital humor, algorithms, and influencer culture shape how identity is presented and interpreted?

Together, participants will examine how two powerful forces—social media and academic institutions—interact to shape and amplify conversations around identity.

This program is part of University Life's Campus Conversations program which is a designed to bring students together across differences through dialogue led by their peers. These conversations are selected and facilitated by graduate students across Columbia's graduate and professional schools. All students are welcome to attend.

Registration is required, but walk-ins will be admitted as space allows. CUID holders only.
