Finding Belonging in a Big City University

April 2, 2026
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM
America/New_York
Kent Hall, 1140 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027 201

Columbia is located in one of the most dynamic cities in the world. New York City offers immense opportunity, diversity, and constant movement. Yet despite being surrounded by people and possibility, many students still experience moments of distance, disconnection, or uncertainty about where they truly belong.

This conversation invites students to reflect together on what belonging looks like in a fast-paced urban environment like New York City and within the Columbia community. Participants will consider questions such as: What helps people feel at home in a city that is always in motion? How does the culture of Columbia shape our sense of connection? And how do students navigate relationships and community in an environment that often emphasizes independence and achievement?

This conversation aims to open space for thoughtful discussion about how belonging is experienced and shaped in a large urban university.

This program is part of University Life's Campus Conversations program which is a designed to bring students together across differences through dialogue led by their peers. These conversations are selected and facilitated by graduate students across Columbia's graduate and professional schools. All students are welcome to attend.
