Drawing Back the Curtain: Nepo Babies and the Myth of Meritocracy

April 30, 2026
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
America/New_York
Kent Hall, 1140 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027 201

We see nepo babies across Hollywood blockbuster films. Yet, beyond Hollywood, other questions arise: how do we see the myth of meritocracy play out in our own lives? Who is deserving of advantageous opportunities? From the red carpet to institutions of higher education, we will discuss hidden paths to achievement. Success operates differently for people depending on their social capital. Come unpack these pathways to success with peers.

Food will be provided to participants.

This program is part of University Life's Campus Conversations program which is a designed to bring students together across differences through dialogue led by their peers. These conversations are selected and facilitated by graduate students across Columbia's graduate and professional schools. All students are welcome to attend.

Registration is required, but walk-ins will be admitted as space allows. CUID holders only.
