Women, Life, Freedom: Iran's  Movement for Women's Rights

November 3, 2022
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
America/New_York
Online Event

In the wake of 22-year-old Mahsa (Jhina) Amini's mid-September death after she was arrested by Iran's Morality Police for improper veiling, the world has witnessed a political movement led by young Iranian women. In response to Mahsa Amini's death,  demonstrators and their allies across Iran (and in many parts of the world) have unified around the motto "women, life, freedom": elemental demands for basic human rights. Once again, the Columbia community is witnessing history as it unfolds.

This conversation, with a range of Columbia experts, will explore the unrest in Iran within the broader historical and geo-political context, where it may lead, and how it connects with other global challenges. Speakers include:

  • Vishakha Desai (Moderator), Senior Advisor for Global Affairs to the President of Columbia University, Chair of the Committee on Global Thought and Senior Research Scholar in Global Studies at the School of International and Public Affair

  • Yasmine Ergas, Professor, School of International and Public Affairs; Director of the Specialization on Gender and Public Policy

  • Manijeh Moradian, Assistant Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Barnard College

  • Kian Tajbakhsh, Senior Advisor at Global Centers, Fellow, Committee on Global Thought

  • Parisa Tehranifar, Associate Professor, Epidemiology at CUIMC
