The field of conflict resolution (CR), negotiation research in particular, has a long history of treating social and psychological processes as explanatory units and forms of application. Interventions, engagements, escalation, de-escalation, tactics, and dynamics are some of the process components of CR theory and applied CR. Similarly, practice theory, a relatively recent approach in IR, focuses on practices to understand the social world. In this view, practices exist prior to agents and structures in a world that is in the making. This presentation seeks to illustrate the major dynamic properties discussed in relational IR with reference to a multi-layered dynamic negotiation framework. The aim here is to delineate patterned, nested social political processes, taking into consideration structuration. Another goal is to discuss the implications of this perspective on CR practice.
