Campus Conversations: Critical Listening Skills

February 28, 2024
5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
America/New_York
Kent Hall, 1140 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027 201

Campus Conversations is a dialogue-based initiative created to promote understanding across differences. It offers undergraduate and graduate students a way to learn critical listening skills, manage difficult conversations, and talk about identity. Join a Campus Conversation and you will make a friend, have a real conversation, and build community at Columbia.

In this workshop, we’ll examine our listening skills. We often take our ability to listen for granted yet many of us rarely truly listen to others. In fact, when was the last time you felt truly listened to? And yet, listening, when done with intention, can have a transformative effect on relationships, as well as the climate and culture of organizations. Listening can also help us navigate difficult conversations with greater success and more effectively address critical situations. In this interactive workshop, we'll review the principles of active listening, assess our listening skills, practice listening to others, and explore the ways that listening is an indispensable tool in creating more just and equitable learning and working environments.

Learning outcomes include:

  1. Understand the principles of active listening
  2. Assess current listening skills
  3. Integrate listening as a tool in cultivating creating inclusion

Workshop led by Ixchel Rosal, Senior Associate Vice President for Student Life.
